Who hosts in Frankfurt
Why put a server in Germany?
Frankfurt is where you host when your users are everywhere in Europe at once. DE-CIX Frankfurt connects 1,018 networks, the most of any exchange in our 15 countries, and peaks above 18 Tbps. The physics floor from here is 4 ms to Berlin, 5 ms to Paris, 9 ms to Warsaw and 14 ms to Madrid.
German data protection is strict and well understood: the GDPR plus the Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG), with the BfDI at federal level and state authorities for most companies. That is why EU businesses with German customers often want their servers here.
Frankfurt is also a strong pick for infrastructure that has to behave: mail, DNS and APIs. Outbound port 25 is open and you can set reverse DNS yourself, so a mail server here doesn’t start with a ticket.

The fastest a round trip from Frankfurt could ever be: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, over the straight-line distance. Real routes are longer and add equipment, so expect more. We only suggest another location when it saves at least 10 ms, and some neighbouring countries don’t connect directly, so a closer location can still be slower. Hourly billing makes it cheap to test both.
Know this before you deploy
A bill approved by the German cabinet in April 2026 would make internet access providers keep the IP addresses they assign for three months. As of 27 October 2026 the Bundestag had held its first reading and a committee hearing, but no final vote, so it is not law.

Germany questions
Before you pick Frankfurt.
Is Frankfurt good for users across Europe?
It is one of the most central points you can pick: the physics floor is 4 ms to Berlin, 5 ms to Paris, 6 ms to London, 9 ms to Warsaw and 14 ms to Madrid.
Should I pick Frankfurt or Amsterdam?
Frankfurt is closer to Central and Eastern Europe (9 ms to Warsaw against 11 ms from Amsterdam). Amsterdam is a little closer to the UK (4 ms to London against 6 ms). Try both by the hour and keep the faster one.
Will Germany make providers keep IP addresses?
Possibly, but the bill is aimed at internet access providers, which assign IP addresses to their users, rather than at server hosts. The federal cabinet approved it on 22 April 2026 with a three-month retention period. The Bundestag held its first reading on 24 June 2026 and a committee hearing on 7 October 2026; as of 27 October 2026 there had been no final vote. We will update this page when there is.
Which data protection rules apply in Germany?
The GDPR plus the Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG). The federal regulator is the BfDI, and state authorities supervise most private companies.
Can I run a mail server in Frankfurt?
Yes. Outbound port 25 is open on every server and you can set reverse DNS for your IP address, which mail servers need. Our terms still apply: no spam.
Does a server here cost more than in other countries?
No. Every plan costs the same in all 15 of our countries, with the same traffic allowance, billed by the hour and never more than the monthly price.
