VPS in Iceland

A VPS in Reykjavik, Iceland, from $4 a month.

Iceland is in the European Economic Area but not the EU, halfway between Europe and North America. It suits work where the location of your data matters more than a few milliseconds. Billed by the hour, never more than the month, paid in crypto.

Who hosts in Reykjavik

Why put a server in Iceland?

Iceland is for people who care where their data sits. It is in the European Economic Area but not the EU: the GDPR applies through the EEA Agreement and Act No. 90/2018, supervised by Persónuvernd, while the EU Digital Services Act is not yet part of the EEA Agreement.

It sits between two continents. The physics floor from Reykjavik is 19 ms to London and 42 ms to New York, so one server reaches both sides of the Atlantic reasonably, without being the fastest for either.

The trade-off is size. RIX, the main exchange, lists 25 networks, and international traffic travels by subsea cable. Keep the latency-critical app in Amsterdam or Frankfurt and put the data and the batch work here.

Latency from Reykjavik

How close is Reykjavik to your users?

The physics minimum, not a marketing number. Where another of our locations is clearly closer, we say so.

The fastest a round trip from Reykjavik could ever be: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, over the straight-line distance. Real routes are longer and add equipment, so expect more. We only suggest another location when it saves at least 10 ms, and some neighbouring countries don’t connect directly, so a closer location can still be slower. Hourly billing makes it cheap to test both.

Know this before you deploy

Iceland has one main internet exchange and its international traffic travels by subsea cable. Expect higher latency to mainland Europe than from the Netherlands or Germany.

How it works

From payment to root in Reykjavik.

No sales call, no paperwork. One crypto deposit funds every server you run, in any of our countries.

  1. Create an account

An email address and a password, plus your country for VAT. No name, no phone number, no ID.

  2. Add funds in crypto

From $20, in Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, USDC, Solana, BNB, XRP or Monero. Your first deposit picks up the launch bonus by itself.

  3. Pick the plan in Reykjavik

Choose an image, add your SSH key or take a root password, and deploy. Billing starts when the server is ready.

  4. Log in and build

Your server is usually ready within 15 minutes. Full root access, an IPv4 address and DDoS filtering come with it.

Iceland questions

Before you pick Reykjavik.

Is Iceland in the EU?

No. Iceland has been in the European Economic Area since 1994 but is not an EU member. The GDPR applies through the EEA Agreement (since 20 July 2018), and the EU Digital Services Act is not yet part of that agreement.

Is Reykjavik fast for North America?

For the East Coast it is reasonable: the physics floor is 42 ms to New York and 42 ms to Toronto. For Chicago and the West, our San Francisco location is closer (30 ms to Chicago against 48 ms from here).

Is Reykjavik fast for mainland Europe?

Slower than the mainland: London is 19 ms from Reykjavik against 4 ms from Amsterdam. Keep latency-critical apps in Amsterdam or Frankfurt.

Who supervises data protection in Iceland?

Persónuvernd, under the GDPR as implemented by Act No. 90/2018.

Does a server here cost more than in other countries?

No. Every plan costs the same in all 15 of our countries, with the same traffic allowance, billed by the hour and never more than the monthly price.
