Start, stop and reboot a server

The power buttons on a LiteKeep server page: Start, Stop and Reboot, what each does, and why a stopped server still bills until you delete it.

Last updated 27 October 2026

Open the server in Servers and use the power buttons on its page: Start, Stop or Reboot. Only the buttons that make sense for the server’s current state are shown. A stopped server still bills, because its address and disk stay yours.

What each button does

  • Start: powers on a stopped server.
  • Stop: powers it off. Shut down from inside the server first if a program needs to save its work.
  • Reboot: restarts a running server.

Stopping does not stop billing

A stopped server keeps its IP address and disk, so it bills as if running. To stop paying, delete the server. Details in when a server bills, and when it stops.

Powered off by an empty balance

If your balance reaches zero, servers billed from it are powered off and kept for 7 days. Add funds and press Start to bring them back.

If something goes wrong

  • A button is missing: only the actions that fit the current state are shown. A running server has Stop and Reboot; a stopped one has Start.
  • No answer after a reboot: give it a minute or two. If SSH still times out, a change inside the server (a firewall rule, a network setting) may be blocking you; open a ticket about the server.
